Towing Sense
Almost everything mentioned in this section is pretty obvious. But we all
tend to miss the obvious!
Every Journey
The trailer should not be loaded beyond it's maximum capacity, tyres should
be properly inflated and legal. The brakes should work properly, so of course
must the lights. Load evenly, with a positive nose-weight of normally 50 kilos.
(depending on the size of the trailer.)
Loads should be properly tied down, jockey wheel up, and the breakaway cable
connected.
The tow vehicle must be able to cope with the additional strain that will be
placed upon it. (Always check all levels and pressure etc.) Also bear in mind
that the trailer gross weight must not exceed the manufacturers recommended
towing limit. Make sure that the mirrors are extended or adjusted as required.
Set up.
Make sure that the trailer is not too heavy for the tow vehicle. Trailer and
tow vehicle should run approximately level. To set the nose weight use a set of
bathroom scales. You may need to alter the height of the tow ball.
Driving
Be careful. Keep out of the outside lane of a motorway with three or more
lanes. Maximum speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways is 60mph. Allow at
least three times the non towing space for slowing down or pulling out.
Reversing.
No not a tutorial. Simply a suggestion
that you practice before being embarrassed.
