Trailer Maintenance.
Because trailers and caravans spend much of their time stuck
in the corner of a garden totally forgotten they should be thoroughly
checked before each season. The following is not a definitive list but it should
help in preventing most roadside disasters.
-
Brakes. If the trailer is to be left for anything more
than a few days do not use the parking brake, because when you try to move
it the chances are very high that the brakes will have seized on. Generally
lubricate all bowden cables (WD40 is ideal) grease fulcrum points and any
exposed cables at least once per year. Also remove brake drums, clean,
lubricate, reassemble and adjust. Make sure that the wheel nuts run freely
on their threads.
-
Wheels and tyres. Perished tyres are a problem. Check for
cracking around the side walls. Check tyre pressures, spin the wheels and
listen for bearing noise. Also check for play. Boat trailers can suffer
because of the sea water. Bearings should be properly lubricated. Tyres have
a load and a speed rating make sure that it is sufficient for the load
carried. Any tyre company should be able to advise.
